Andre Giere

Senior Manager Radar Algorithm & Microwave. | Lead Engineer Advanced Radar , Cruise

Andre Giere is a Senior Manager of Radar Algorithm & Microwave at Cruise Munich. He leads a team that develops 4D imaging radar systems designed to generate dense radar point clouds for Level 4/Level 5 autonomous vehicle systems. These systems are optimized to enable robust perception and provide reliable data for autonomous vehicles at both short and long distances, under various weather conditions, ensuring safe driverless rides in urban environments. Before Cruise acquired Astyx in April 2020, Andre worked at Astyx GmbH, before Cruise acquired Astyx in April 2020. At Astyx he was involved in various projects challenging the 77GHz microwave design and radar signal processing. At Astyx, Andre contributed significantly to the development and evaluation of high-resolution radar systems for automotive and industry applications. The work at Astyx laid a strong foundation for his current role at Cruise, where he continues to push the boundaries of radar technology for autonomous driving. Andre's passion lies in radio frequency technology and advanced signal processing algorithms. He earned his PhD in 2009 in High-frequency Engineering from the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany. His expertise and leadership have been instrumental in advancing radar technology for autonomous driving.

The Pop in Your Job – What drives you? Why do you love your job?
The energy with which we are able to tackle technology challenges drawing on experience in radar technology combined with passion for AD makes working on this team at cruise an absolute pleasure. Andre's team develops 4D imaging radar systems to generate dense radar point clouds for L4/L5 systems. These systems are optimized to enable robust perception and provide reliable data for AVs at short or long distances, by day and night, in sunshine or heavy rain, for safe driverless rides in our cities.

Session

A | Intelligent Perception Stream | Case Study

Monday, March 17

11:15 am - 11:45 am

Live in Berlin

Less Details

This talk will explore the key features of advanced radar systems for L5 autonomous driving, focusing on performance aspects and design requirements to support perception. It will also cover radar architecture that ensures robust, safe, and efficient usage. High-resolution radar systems, integrating an AI-enabled scalable architecture, are pivotal in supporting Cruise’s goal of achieving safe and efficient L5 autonomous driving. In this session, you will learn that:

  • Future radar needs high resolution and dynamic range for precise L5 autonomous driving data
  • Next-gen radar should enhance object detection by handling dense point clouds and statistical data
  • Radar must support HRR and move to SDV centralized processing to reduce costs and simplify design

Company

Cruise

Cruise is building the world’s most advanced self-driving vehicles. Since our 2013 founding in San Francisco, we have hired over 1,600 talented individuals and opened additional offices in greater Seattle, Pasadena, Phoenix and Munich. We have raised $10B from General Motors, Honda, Microsoft, SoftBank, T. Rowe Price, Walmart and others. Through our partnerships with General Motors and Honda, we are the only self-driving company with fully integrated manufacturing at scale, building all-electric, zero-emission, self-driving vehicles that will help save lives, reimagine cities, reduce carbon pollution, redefine time in transit, and restore freedom of movement for individuals who live in dense urban settings.
