Giulia Morandin is a JRC project manager and inspector for the European Commission market surveillance in the automotive sector. She performs regulatory checks on passenger vehicle’s safety systems.
With more than 6 years of experience in vehicle testing she has a good overview of the automotive world and especially of the ADAS and AD systems.
After her master degree in Mechanical Engineer at the Politecnico of Milano she performed test research campaigns in the vehicle dynamic field with Pirelli, Brembo, Ducati and KTM, among others, as an external consultant. In 2019 she joined the Spanish headquarter of Applus+ IDIADA as a testing and research engineer for ADAS and AD. She was involved in European projects, vehicle development, EuroNCAP and NHTSA rating, having the opportunity to discover and test the most innovative ADAS and AD technologies. In the innovation center of Generali Jeniot she studied vehicle crashworthiness and ADAS effect on accidents frequency and severity from the insurance point of view.
Since joining the JRC, in addition to the market surveillance activities she also performs pre-normative research on Automatically Commanded Steering Function, Advanced Emergency Braking System, Intelligent Speed Assist and Emergency Lane-Keeping Systems.

The European Commission carries out market surveillance in the automotive sector to verify vehicle’s compliance with the relevant safety requirements, even after the vehicle was introduced in the European market. But are we sure that a simple repetition of the type-approval tests is enough? This presentation delves into the performance disparities between traditional type-approval testing and the pre-normative research evaluations conducted by the JRC. Unlike the controlled environments of type-approval, the JRC tests the vehicles in real-world environment and more complex scenarios, uncovering limitations of ADAS and AD functions that might not surface in more controlled settings.
